Discovering The Secret & Hidden Speak Easy of Dr Phillips: The Pharmacy
In my experience, the best surprises are those unexpected, with no warning or expectations. On my way to take some promotional photos for a place called The Pharmacy, a place I have never been to, I was full of emotions when I came to this magical hidden speak easy.
There are VERY few places in Orlando that you feel transported to another era, and The Pharmacy does just that.
Where is it?
The Pharmacy is located in the elegant Dellagio Town Center in Dr. Phillips, a prestigious area of Orlando, about 10 minutes from Universal Studios. When you get to the Town Center, there are NO SIGNS that mention this place. I looked on the directory list, and The Pharmacy is not listed, but my GPS was saying I was standing right on it.
Confused and circling around like I was insane, I gave in and asked for help. I was walked to a plain concrete wall with what looked like an elevator door and a small button on the side.
He pressed the button, the metal doors opened, and I was transported to NYC 1920s....O-M-G...someone pinch me!
I wont spoil the many surprises this place has to offer. I'll let you know there are just some "house rules" that are given on the menu that I find goes well with the atmosphere, and provides some wonderful and eclectic humor. Below are just ONE of the "House Rules".
"Congratulations, you found us. Welcome to our humble juice joint. We got some rules in this here gin mill. Follow them and we'll be golden. Don't and you will be told to scream. So let's have fun and everything will be copacetic!"
Right when you walk in , you see the podium greeter to your right, and the beautiful dimly lit bar right at the front. The space is small but intimate, with metal chairs and warm wooden table accents, with hanging old NYC style lighting and lamps surrounding you.
You are seated as if you were back in time in NYC- the middle seats are left empty, only the seats on the far left and the far right are occupied. I love this style. Whether you go solo or with a friend, you can easily meet new people when they are seated at the same table, but not in a side by side scenario, giving everyone a little space if needed.
I especially enjoyed the spirit and the unique specialty cocktail selection. From 5PM-6:30PM, guests can enjoy half off of the drink menu.
I loved seeing the humorous and old time names of the drinks, such as Blonde Donkey, Luck Be Ah Lady, Rx Tonics, Hemingway Champagne, For You, Doll Face, and Wake Up Dead. Ill let you decide which one you want to try for yourself.
I went with something slightly sweet and slightly twisted with a punch. The Cordial Maniac was made with Rx Gin/ Irish Whiskey Marriage, St. George Raspberry, Gomme, garnished with Lemon Peel.
How Beautiful and Delicious this drink was!
I had the pleasure of having a server who knew the menu very well and recommended some out of this world dishes that I tried myself.
Start off your feast with the Half Pound Whole Buttery, Garlicky Cape Canaveral Rock Shrimp. Be careful. Once consumed, you'll never want any other shrimp. The flavor and the tastiness of butter and garlic with each shrimp bite was addicting. I really want a whole bucket full. Perfect for sharing ...or maybe not ;) . Its too good.
The flavors continue with the main dish Brined Double Cut Pork with Tallahassee double corn grits, pork belly, collard greens, topped with fried large sweet onions. The sweet , salty, and earthy flavors come together for this delicious southern hearty plate. The grits were chunky and my favorite part. Keep in mind, they are generous with the portions. No complaints here.
The best and only banana split you will ever need is this one here. Called Caramelized Banana Split. The name is simple, but don't be fooled. It packs a punch, made with vanilla ice cream, caramelized sliced bananas, coconut crumble, and drenched in hot chocolate. Can you say OMFG? Kill me with this. What a way to end the night. I'm in love.
Whether you are local to the city or visiting, you are guaranteed a one of a kind experience at The Pharmacy. Enter the doors and be ready for amazement.
